This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'.
Hopefield Cottage, built in 1851, stands in a walled garden facing Chamberlain Road, and is one of the few houses in the street to retain its original name.
Hopefield Cottage was built for the preacher and writer on religious subjects, Dr John Kirk. Famed for his leadership of the Evangelical Union, he held open-air services on Bruntsfield Links, and was a fervent promoter of the abstinence movement.
