Title
St Bernard's Crescent, Edinburgh, looking east
Description
The view shows a wide street of houses and flats. The houses on the left side have stepped entrances separated by railings and large columns. The road divides in the centre of the picture around an island which is covered in trees and foliage. Street lamps are placed at regular intervals along the pavements which run along either side of the road. Men, women and children can be seen walking along the paths and there is an early motorcar parked on the right.

This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'. Dean Village is a riverside community in the west of Edinburgh, roughly half a mile from the West End of Princes Street. It has a long history as a grain milling hamlet stretching back at least as far as the early 12th century. The increasing strength of the Leith flour mills in the 19th century led to a period of economic decline in the village, but it is now an affluent and desirable place to live. Despite its close proximity to the centre of Edinburgh, Dean Village retains a quiet atmosphere in keeping with its rural heritage.
