This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'.
Pilrig House was built in 1638 by Edinburgh Goldsmith Gilbert Kirkwood. In 1718 it was bought by James Balfour, Great Grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, and is mentioned in two of Stevenson's books Kidnapped and Catriona.
