Description
Three women are talking in front of a grocery shop. One on the women holds her purchases in her arms. The women wear heavy winter clothes and woolen shawls. There are tins, boxes and bottles stacked up on display in the shop windows and sacks of potatoes in the doorway. There is an advertising poster in the doorway for Royal Irish Distilleries.

This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
