Originally the name of this temple was Shorenin Temple but it is also called Awada-Gosho. Gosho means imperial palace because an emperor or a member of the Japanese imperial family lives there. The temple is called Awada-Gosho because when the imperial palace was burned down in 1788, the retired emperor Gosakuramachi lived there as his temporal palace.
