The Cowgate runs from its junction with St Mary's Street (formerly St Mary's Wynd) and the Pleasance to the Grassmarket. It was the route by which cattle were driven into town from outside the city.The Cowgate Port was a gateway through the Flodden wall (City Wall).

St Patrick's Church was built in 1774. It was originally called the Cowgate Chapel and housed a Scottish Episcopalian Congregation. It was sold to the Catholic Church in 1856 and renamed St Patrick's.
