Title
Akashi (Akashi) Chapter 13 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
A woman crouches at Mitsuuji's (Genji's) side holding a lamp. It is night and the couple are in a garden with a view of the seashore and a full moon behind them.
Mitsuuji holds a fan decorated with a swirling wave pattern. His purple jacket is decorated with his crest of crossed cloves (an auspicious symbol), and a repeated naive pattern of country folk. At his waist the hilt of his sword is visible.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Akashi', Chapter 11. In this chapter the storms at Suma continue to rage and a bolt of lightning strikes the gallery close to Genji's private rooms. In a dream Genji is visited by his father who admonishes him for staying in such a remote and dangerous place. When he awakes he is met by the Novice who invites Genji to stay at one of his mansions in Akashi.
The Novice invites Genji to listen to his daughter play the koto, and Genji begins to court the Akashi Lady. While Genji has been away from court, the Kokiden Consort (now known as the Empress Mother) and her son the Emperor Suzaku have suffered from ill health. The Emperor pardons Genji and calls him back to the city. Genji prepares to leave but is torn between staying with the now pregnant Akashi Lady and returning to the capital. Upon his return, Genji is promoted to Acting Grand Counsellor.
