Description

Looking west along Princes Street from the Scott Monument we see the Royal Scottish Academy with its ionic columns and the lawns and paths of Princes Street gardens. Horse and carriages wait in line along the road and many of the shops have awnings. A section of the Castle Rock can be seen on the left.

The Scott Monument was built as a memorial to the writer Sir Walter Scott. Construction took place between 1840-1846 on the George Kemp design. Two hundred and eighty seven steps take you to the top, offering views along Princes Street.

Princes Street is one of the main thoroughfares in Edinburgh. It is notable in that there are no buildings on its southern side. Princes Street gardens now occupy the space on the southern side. The gardens were created on the site of the Nor' Loch after it was drained in the Eighteenth Century.
