The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, an organisation principally concerned with the postgraduate training and examination of doctors, is based on Queen Street. The main building was designed by Thomas Hamilton for the RCPE and completed in 1844. The RCPE has expanded its premises beyond Hamilton's building, acquiring property on both sides including number 8 Queen Street, built by Robert Adam in 1770-1 for Baron Orde. The Sir Robert Sibbald Physic Garden was opened in 1996 to demonstrate the importance of plants to mankind throughout the ages. The sundial was installed in 2001 and was made by Harriet James.
