Description

The Grand Staircase leads up from the entrance hall of the Royal College of Physicians. Flower arrangements stand on pillars at the foot of the staircase. The stair balustrade is gilded with gold leaf. A bust is above the central door at the top of the stair.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, an organisation principally concerned with the postgraduate training and examination of doctors, is based on Queen Street. The main building was designed by Thomas Hamilton for the RCPE and completed in 1844. The RCPE has expanded its premises beyond Hamilton's building, acquiring property on both sides including number 8 Queen Street, built by Robert Adam in 1770-1 for Baron Orde.
