Description

A door opens into the library of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. Next to the doorway is the entrance to the spiral staircase that leads to the balcony. Glass fronted bookcases are on both levels. A wooden and ornate metal railing forms the balustrade for the balcony.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, an organisation principally concerned with the postgraduate training and examination of doctors, is based on Queen Street. The main building was designed by Thomas Hamilton for the RCPE and completed in 1844. The RCPE has expanded its premises beyond Hamilton's building, acquiring property on both sides including number 8 Queen Street, built by Robert Adam in 1770-1 for Baron Orde. The architect for the library was David Bryce.
