Full title reads 'Ruthven Castle or Hunting Tower near Perth scene of the Raid of Ruthven 1600, 19th July 1831. Inner [?] face to the north'.
The earliest parts of the castle date to the 15th century, when the castle was known Ruthven House and was owned by the Clan Ruthven family. In 1600, when two Ruthven brothers were implemented in a plot to kill the King, all their lands were seized and the name of the castle was changed to Huntingtower and passed into the hands of the Dukes of Atholl until 1767, when it was abandoned.
