Newbattle Abbey in the village of Newbattle in Midlothian was founded in 1140 by Cistercian monks on grounds gifted to them by King David I. The Newbattle monks were the first to mine coal in the area and were most probably Scotland's first miners. The building was heavily damaged by a series of raids by the English during the 14th and15th Century. Newbattle Abbey remained the home of the Marquesses of Lothian until being given to the nation in 1937 by Philip Kerr, 11th Marquess of Lothian, to be used as a College of Education.
