Biography
John Gendall was born on Exe Island (Exeter) in either 1789 or 1790. He worked initially as a servant but in 1811 was taken into the employ of the London publisher and print seller Rudolph Ackerman. He worked for Ackerman as a draughtsman until 1824. During this period Ackerman published engravings of many of his works. He returned to Devon in 1824 where he stayed for the rest of his life. He worked initially in partnership with A. Cole selling works of art and providing accompanying services. He went on to set up his own business and art school. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1818 and 1863, and died in Exeter in 1865.
