About the artist
Name
Allom, Thomas
Biography
Thomas Allom was born in London in 1804. He trained as an architect under Francis Goodwin with whom he collaborated on many projects. He practiced as an architect, principally in London, and was a founder member of Royal Institute of British Architects. He travelled widely in Britain and Europe, and further afield including Turkey and Palestine. He is notable for his habit of populating his topographical scenes with prominent local figures or historical events. His study of Linlithgow Palace for example recreated its burning at the hands of government troops in 1746. Similarly his study of the West Bow in Edinburgh shows the imagined final decent of the condemned Covenanteers to their place of execution in the Grassmarket. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1827 and 1871. He died in Barnes in 1872.
