Biography
The painter and watercolourist John Claude Nattes was born around 1865. He is most probably of French origin although this is not certain He studied under Hugh Primrose Dean having seemingly been employed as his servant in Rome. He travelled widely but was based in London for most of his career. He was one of the founder members of the Society of Painters in Watercolours (later the Old Watercolour Society, then Royal Watercolour Society) in 1804. He was famously expelled from the society in 1807 for exhibiting the work of others as his own. Despite this his career continued unhindered. He exhibited in the RA from 1782-1814 and published several albums of landscape work including The Beauties of England and Wales. At the turn of the century he produced a series of drawings for a work entitled Scotia Depicta published in 1804. He also produced two views of Edinburgh Castle in 1801 which were made into aquatints. He left London in 1822, probably for France. He died in Dover in 1839.
