The Quartermile development occupies the former site of Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary and incorporates many of the hospital's buildings. The development comprises residential, commercial and retail space. Work began on the site in 2005 and is ongoing. Aspects of the development have attracted some controversy, especially as it lies within the confines of Edinburgh's World Heritage site.
