The Prince Albert Memorial was inaugerated in August 1876 at a ceremony presided over by Queen Victoria. The piece as a whole was designed by David Bryce, and the main statue is the work of Sir John Steell. The cost of £16,500 was met by public subscription. It commemorates Queen Victoria's husband who died in December 1861 at the age of 42.
