Biography
William Nicholson was born in Newark-on-Trent in 1872. After school he studied at Herkomer's Art School in Bushey, and briefly at the Académie Julian in Paris. His body of work divides into two general areas: the printmaking and poster art which largely dates from before 1900 and the portrait and landscape painting which Nicholson concentrated on after the turn of the century. Notable works from the earlier period include 'An Alphabet' and 'An Almanac of Twelve Sports' both collections of woodcut prints. Notable portraits include those of Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm (1905) and Gertrude Jekyll (1920), both in the National Portrait Gallery, and 'Lady in Furs' in the Tate Collection. His still life and landscape work, for example 'Plaza de Toros, Malaga' (1935), also has an enduring reputation. Also of note is Nicholson's theatrical work, including his set and costume designs for the first production of Peter Pan in 1904. He died in Blewbury, Berkshire in 1949.
