Collins, William
Biography
The English painter William Collins was born in 1788 in London. He studied initially under his father's friend George Morland and later at the Royal Academy Schools. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1814 and a full member six years later. In 1822 he married Harriet Geddes whilst in Edinburgh covering a royal visit. The couple had two children, the painter Charles Allston Collins and the writer Wilkie Collins. He made several trips to Europe, including an extended stay in Italy and France in the 1830's. He died in London in 1847 having become a highly successful and famous artist.
