Gastineau, Henry
Biography
Henry Gastineau was born in London in 1791, where he studied at the Royal Academy. Of Huguenot origins, he was based in Camberwell, London until his death in 1876. His main successes were in watercolour and he exhibited at the Society of Painters in Water Colours for fifty eight years continuously. His work featured mainly architectural and landscape subjects, primarily of British locations, initially supplying to the print trade, but later enjoying his position as an exhibiting artist. From 1829 on, Continental scenes also figured after trips to Italy, Germany and Switzerland were taken, it is believed, with his friend J M W Turner. Gastineau's work is seen as technically competent and somewhat conventional. His landscape sketches, in wash over pencil, are considered more groundbreaking. The works have been reproduced mainly by steel-engraving, but also lithography.
