Three captains of the Edinburgh Town Guard in uniform. On the right is George Pitcairn, in the centre is George Robertson, and on the right is Robert Pillans. Pitcairn has a captain's staff, Robertson is holding a sword (type known as a "charger") and Pillans is holding a long staff.

A local legend attributes the origins of the Town Guard with Roman soldiers who had attended the Crucifixion (overseen by the Governor Pontius Pilate) and who later came to Britain when the Emperor Claudius invaded.
