Title
Foot of the Walk
Description
An atmospheric night-time image of the foot of Leith Walk, Edinburgh. The broad expanse of Leith Walk fills most of the picture with several cars travelling in the direction of Great Junction Street. On the right-hand side of the street is the old Central Station building with shops underneath. The road divides in two at the bottom, leading to Constitution Street on the right and the shops of the Kirkgate can just be seen on the left. A tall tower block is in the background. A long exposure has been used to achieve the light effects in the picture.

Leith Walk in Edinburgh is a notably wide street running from the west side of Calton Hill down to Great Junction Street in Leith. It follows the line of a raised pedestrian walkway which ran along the top of an earthen rampart constructed to defend the city against Cromwell's army in 1650. In 1776 this walkway and the road immediately to its west were combined as a single, modern road. This road, along with North Bridge and Leith Street, provided greatly improved access to Leith from Edinburgh.
