Annotation below painting reads 'Sketched from nature 11th February 1862'.
A further annotation below the painting reads 'At this gateway, George Wishart the martyr, entered a "free man" January 1546, - but at midnight Lord Bothwell and a party of his followers, carried him off, promising however to Cockburn his host, that he would not permit him to be harmed, but he was carried to Elphinstone, and then to St Andrews, where he perished at the stake the 1st March 1546.'
