The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'Vogrie House, the property of Captain James Cumming Dewar, is situated in the parish of Borthwick, and is not far from the town of Dalkeith, Midlothian.
It is a plain modern building, and was erected about five years ago by Colonel Alexander Cumming Dewar, father of the present proprietor. His brother James Dewar, did much, however, in recent years to improve and beautify the grounds by the formation of shrubberies and extensive plantations.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Vogrie House is now home to the Midlothian Ranger Service.
