The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Sir James Henry Gibson Craig, is situated in the parish of Currie, about six miles from Edinburgh. The body of the house was built by Sir Lewis Craig and finished in 1621, but the square tower at the west end is much older, and is supposed to be the place bestowed by Robert Bruce as part of the dowry of his daughter when he gave her in marriage to the Steward of Scotland. A large addition in the Elizabethan style of architecture was made by Sir James, first baronet, and completed in 1827.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Riccarton House was demolished in 1956.
