The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This large mansion, a residence of the Right Hon. the Earl of Stair, is situated in the parish of Cranston, four miles south of Dalkeith. It stands in the valley of the Tyne, and is surrounded by a large and well wooded park. Its site is very commanding, and from it the course of the Tyne can be traced in the valley below, flowing through beautiful and extensive grounds, till it disappears among the woods of Ormiston and Winton.
Little is known of the original building, but about the end of the last century Robert Adam, the well-known architect, almost entirely remodelled it. After that time a large addition was made under the care of William Burn, architect.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Oxenfoord is now a wedding venue.
