The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This elegant and commodious mansion, the residence of Colonel Henry Trotter, is situated in the parish of Liberton, a short distance from the southern suburbs of Edinburgh. It was built about the year 1769, but was much improved by Richard Trotter, Esq., the father of the present proprietor. It stands on the site of an older house, which in more ancient times was a fort or stronghold, surrounded with water, and having an entry into it by a drawbridge.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Mortonhall has now been converted into flats.
