The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Sir John Don Wauchope, Bart., is situated in the parish of Newton, about three miles from Edinburgh. It is a large and spacious house, and although its exterior has no pretensions to architectural beauty, it is in its internal arrangements very elegant and commodious. The building presents a modern appearance, but part of it is very ancient, and known to be at least four hundred years old.'
