The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'Curriehill, the residence of Archibald Buchanan, Esq., is situated in the parish of Currie, Midlothian. It is a modern house, which has had considerable additions made to it by the late Lord Curriehill, and by Mr Buchanan, the present proprietor. In the neighbourhood are the ruins of Curriehill Castle, a place of note in the time of Queen Mary. It then was one of six places - three on each side of the Water of Leith - in the neighbourhood of Edinburgh that were fortified. Curriehill, however, was garrisoned by the opponents of that queen.' The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Scottish Library, Central Library, Edinburgh.
