The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Major John Moubray Trotter, is situated in the Parish of Colinton, about three miles from Edinburgh. It stands on a rising ground close to the Water of Leith, in a well-wooded park, and commands a fine view to the north and east. The house was built at a considerable expense about the beginning of the present century by the eminent Scottish banker, Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, Bart.'
