The accompanying descriptive text in the volume reads as follows:
'Calder Hall, the residence of Colonel James Hare, is situated in the parish of Kirknewton. It is a square and commodious house, situated in well kept grounds.
The present mansion was built about eighty years ago by Dr James Hare, grand-uncle of Stewart Bayley Hare, Esq., the late proprietor.
The barony of Calder Hall was purchased from the family of Houston, now represented by Sir George Houston-Boswall of Blackadder, and formerly was part of the Church lands belonging to the Abbey of Kelso.'

Calder Hall is now demolished.
