The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, a seat of Sir James Ramsay Gibson Maitland, Bart., is situated on a gentle declivity at the northern extremity of Corstorphine hill, almost in the centre of the parish of Cramond, about three miles from Edinburgh. It is a house of considerable size, containing many spacious apartments. The older portion has had great additions made to it, and a circular tower at the entrance is in keeping with its original architecture. The entrance hall, lined with carved oak, and the great staircase are very elegant, and were fitted up at great expense.'
