Description
A plaque in memory of Mary Erskine is mounted on a stone wall in Greyfriar's Kirkyard. In front of it are herbs and shrubbery. The plaque reads "In memory of Mary Erskine who with The Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh founded The Merchant Maiden Hospital Born 12 May 1629 Died 2 July 1707".

Mary Erskine was a merchant, property owner, herbalist and private banker. Twice widowed, her only daughter died aged six. She established the first school for girls in Scotland. The Merchant Maiden Hospital opened in the Cowgate in 1696. It later moved to Queen Street and was renamed the Edinburgh Ladies College, before becoming the Mary Erskine School on its 250th anniversary. Mary Erskine is buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard.
