Entrance to Covenanters Gaol, Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh

Description

The gates to the Covenanter's Gaol in Greyfriars Churchyard are closed. The gaol is enclosed by a stone wall which has headstones on it. Gravestones are in front of the wall and autumn leaves have fallen upon the tops of the graves. Sunlight shines through the partially bare branches of the trees.

Greyfriars Kirkyard, or Graveyard, is the burial ground of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. It houses the graves of many notable historical figures including the poet Allan Ramsay, the geologist James Hutton and the architect William Adam. In 1679 several hundred Covenanters were imprisoned in the Kirkyard awaiting trial.
