Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre is situated on Grindlay Street, immediately to the south-east of the Usher Hall. It was built by C. J. Phipps for the theatre management company Howard and Wyndham, and was completed in 1883. It is an early example of a building designed to be lit by electricity. The theatre runs a programme of both classic and contemporary theatre, and in August becomes a venue for the Edinburgh International Festival.
