Edinburgh Airport was originally a WW1 aerodrome, becoming known as RAF Turnhouse. After WW2, the airfield remained under military control, but facilities were shared for non-military use. In 1947 the first shuttle service between Edinburgh and London took off. In 1977, during her Silver Jubilee visit, Queen Elizabeth II opened the new terminal at 'Edinburgh Airport'. Scotland's First Minister opened the terminal extension in 2006 and in August 2011, the airport experienced the busiest month in its history, transiting almost 1 million passengers.
