'This confident view of the levels of modernised Edinburgh indicates the scale of engineering required to replace the old Upper Bow and construct the new George 1V Bridge. You can just make out the chimneys of the Cowgate below it. The arcaded terrace (itself a homage to old Edinburgh) on the left remains incomplete, since at that date, it provided the only access through to Riddle's Court which was then inaccessible to the Lawnmarket.'
