Donaldson's College is situated on West Coates, close to Haymarket Station in Edinburgh. It was designed by W. H. Playfair and built between 1841 and 1851 with money bequeathed by the publisher Sir James Donaldson. The school was originally intended for the education of poor children with provision for deaf children as well, but the school focussed exclusively on the latter group from 1938 onwards. Donaldson's College is scheduled to move to new, purpose built premises in January 2008.
