Engraving on arrowhead appears to read 'This arrow was win [sic] by Cap.t Robert Dobie in August 28 1683.'
This engraved arrowhead represents the Musselburgh Silver Arrow, a contest which is reputed to be the oldest sporting trophy in the world that is still competed for annually.
First recorded details of the competition date from 1603, and pre-date the formation of the Royal Company of Archers (the Queen's Bodyguard in Scotland). Since 1676 however, the annual competition has been restricted to members of the Royal Company.
