Daniel Stewart's College opened in 1855 as a school for orphan and destitute boys. As with other Edinburgh 'hospitals' of this period the school soon moved away from its wholly charitable origins towards education for fee paying pupils. In 1972 the college merged with Melville College to form Daniel Stewart's and Melville College, now Stewart's Melville College. The school building was designed by David Rhind and is situated on Queensferry Road, immediately north-west of Dean Village.
