Description

A woman sits on a chair beside a small table where she has a tray of fruit displayed for sale. She wears a fancy bonnet and a red shawl and her arms are folded across her long apron.

The poet, Donald Campbell has written a poem inspired by this character by Holt:

Apple Glory

Friend of the famous and the fair,
Apple Glory kept her stall
for many a year on Shakespere Square
where everybody knew the call
of her sweet voice, that beatific smile,
a style beloved by one and all.

Edward Holt was an Edinburgh caricaturist and figure painter working in the second half of the nineteenth century. This bound volume contains a large proportion of his surviving work.
Shakespeare Square stood at the junction of North Bridge and Waterloo Place in Edinburgh. It was the location of Edinburgh's Theatre Royal until the demolition of the theatre and square in 1859 to make way for the General Post Office building. This building still stands on the site.
There is a little uncertainty over Edward Holt's name. He is sometimes referred to as Edmund and was more commonly known as Ned.
