Title
Known as 'Chew the Monkey'
Description
An elderly man leans on a walking stick and holds out his hand to passersby.
The poet, Donald Campbell has written a poem inspired by this character by Holt:
Chew the Monkey
"Chew the monkey" they call him
for his constant chatter.
Whatever may befall him
he'll needlessly natter.
Let some fairground install him,
performing his patter.
"Chew the monkey" they call him.
He's mad as a hatter.

Edward Holt was an Edinburgh caricaturist and figure painter working in the second half of the nineteenth century. This image is taken from a bound volume which contains a large proportion of his surviving work.
There is a little uncertainty over Edward Holt's name. He is sometimes referred to as Edmund and was more commonly known as Ned.
