The Royal Mile, Edinburgh' oldest thoroughfare, runs for a mile from Edinburgh Castle at the top of Castle Rock to Holyrood Palace. Its name changes during this descent, beginning as Castle Hill, changing to Lawnmarket, Canongate, High Street and finally Abbey Strand.
