The gasworks in New Street were the first purpose-built gasworks in Edinburgh, it provided the fuel for the streetlamps on Princes Street and the city's factories during the Industrial Revolution. It began production in 1817 when the fuel was a new discovery and, at its height, employed around 200 people. The works eventually moved in the early 20th century to cope with rising demand for gas - leaving the site to be partially demolished and covered over to make way for the bus depot in the 1930s.
