Description
A view of the gothic church, St John's Chapel, on Princes Street, Edinburgh. Horses race along the road towards Calton Gaol and Calton Hill, with Nelson's Monument visible on the summit against the clouds. To the right of the church, behind the trees, the spire of St Cutbert's church and the castle can be seen against the blue sky.

Watercolour drawing of St.John's Chapel at the West end of Princes Street , Edinburgh. The spire of St.Cuthbert's Church and Edinburgh Castle can be seen to the right. The Calton Jail and Nelson's Monument can also be seen in the distance to the left of the painting. St.John's Chapel (now Church) was designed by the architect, William Burn and construction began in 1816 and finished 19 March 1818. Skene therefore painted this picture the year the church was completed.
