Title
Mound in the snow
Description
A tall Christmas tree lit up with lights stands on the Mound, Edinburgh. The surrounding grass is covered with snow. Wrought iron railings surround the grass covered slope and streetlights are spread along its length. A lady stands at a bus stop at the side of the road. Many city landmarks form a background to the scene. To the left stands New College, in the centre the houses of Ramsey Gardens and to the far right part of Edinburgh Castle.

Construction of the Mound was begun in the 1760's by the tailor George Boyd to give him better access to his New Town clients from his Old Town shop. Large amounts of waste material from the development of New Town was added to 'Geordie Boyd's Mud Brig' creating a substantial link road. Further more formal development of the Mound begun in 1825 following the foundation of the Royal Institution at its foot.
Ramsay Garden stands immediately to the north of the entrance to the Castle Esplanade. The complex incorporates the home of Alan Ramsay, known as Ramsay Lodge or the 'Goose Pie', designed and built by the poet around 1740. The additional buildings were designed by S. Henbest Capper and Sidney Mitchell and built between 1892-93. They included a block of flats for Professor Patrick Geddes and mixed accommodation for Edinburgh University students and non-student residents of the city.
