In 1783-9 James, Earl of Lauderdale resided in this mansion, just east of the Hermitage, which by 1812 was occupied by Lady Fyfe. There was also a well on Leith Links called Lady Fyfe's Well and the hill on the Links nearest to the house, which may have been used as an artillery mound during the siege of Leith in 1560, was known as Lady Fyfe's Brae at one time (but named as Pelham's Battery on later maps).
