Description

The Cowgate is lined with tall stone buildings and goes under the stone arch of George IV Bridge. The building to the left is the bottom of Edinburgh Central Public Library. On the other side of the bridge part of the National Library of Scotland building, and Parliament House can be seen.

The Cowgate runs from its junction with St Mary's Street (formerly St Mary's Wynd) and the Pleasance to the Grassmarket. Cattle were driven along this route when entering Edinburgh from grazing land outside the city.

Edinburgh Central Public Library is, strictly speaking, located on the Cowgate. It rises up four floors from this level to its main entrance on George IV Bridge. It was designed by George Washington Browne, and built in 1887-90. It was built with money donated by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Central Library acts as the community library for the centre of the city. It also has several subject dedicated sections: the Fine Art Library; Music Library; Scottish Library; Central Reference and the Edinburgh Room.
