This photograph depicts the community newspaper, The Sentinel, being delivered to residents' flats. This was possibly a promotional picture as when it first started, the paper had difficulty recruiting delivery boys and girls.
The Sentinel was established to provide an information gathering and dissemination service and to foster a sense of community spirit within Wester Hailes. It was founded by Mel Young in 1977. The newspaper started with a small editorial team relying on voluntary contributors from the local community, but in time, was able to employ staff writers. The Sentinel supported local campaigns including the fundraising programme to send a young

former local resident and jazz musician, to study in America. The Sentinel was published weekly as a 24 page tabloid newspaper and in March 1985, it celebrated its 100th issue. The paper was superseded by the West Edinburgh Times which continued publication until 2008.
